Advanced Powerboating Cruising

Overview

Advanced Powerboat Cruising (APC) will take your powerboat cruising skills to the next level. Building upon prerequisite Basic Powerboat Cruising (BPC) skills, this course focuses on more advanced techniques and detailed training with a blend of classroom and on-the-water experiences.

Prerequisites

  • US Sailing Basic Powerboat Cruising (BPC), or Windworks Powerboating Conversion
  • Windworks Power Catamaran certification, or significant twin-screw inboard powerboat experience and instructor permission. *When combined with an optional additional day before the start of class, students can also earn the Windworks Power Catamaran certification.
  • Highly recommended: US Powerboating/US Sailing Essential Marine Navigation (Nav 1) aka Electronic Navigation and Piloting.

Certifications

Graduates of this course also qualify for the International Proficiency Certificate (IPC) from US Sailing, which acts as a “driver’s license” for chartering boats in European waters. Required in most EU, this certificate assures charter companies that you are educated, certified, and capable of handling a boat safely on your own.

Training Vessel

This course is conducted on our 37’ Fountaine Pajot MY4.S Power Catamaran, equipped with advanced cruising systems including generator (genset), thrusters, convection stovetop and grill, video monitoring, reverse cycle heat and air conditioning, B&G chart plotter and RADAR, AIS, 2 refrigerators, 3 cabins, 2 heads, twin 220hp diesel engines.

Instructor

Capt. Margaret Pommert is a US Powerboating certified Powerboat Cruising Instructor and Instructor Trainer. Her powerboat cruising experience includes many seasons leading the Waggoner Guide flotilla of cruising powerboats all the way up the Inside Passage to Alaska, in wide variety of weather and sea conditions. Her 45,000 sea miles include a 3,000-mile offshore passage on power cruiser from Hawaii to Fiji. She’s an ABYC certified marine diesel engine advisor. Margaret also teaches Coastal Passage Making, Safety at Sea, and advanced navigation courses.
