Seattle → Kingston → Langley → Seattle
The North Sound Loop is the ultimate weekend escape for sailors who want to trade the Seattle skyline for quiet island bluffs and artisan villages. This route balances manageable sailing distances with high-reward destinations, offering a perfect snapshot of Whidbey Island’s beauty and the welcoming spirit of the Kitsap Peninsula.
Friday — Seattle → Kingston (~13 NM)
Make a break for it after work. This short crossing gets you out of the city traffic and into "island time" before the sun sets.
- Stay: Kingston Marina (Port of Kingston). Located immediately adjacent to the ferry terminal.
- Activity: Walk the park trails surrounding the marina or visit the local hardware store—it’s a classic throwback with a little bit of everything.
- Tip: Grab a scoop of ice cream at the shop near the ferry lanes and walk out to the breakwater to watch the sunset over the Olympic Mountains.
- Dinner Ashore: Sela’s Crêperie for savory buckwheat crêpes or Main Street Ale House for a classic pub atmosphere.
Saturday — Kingston → Langley (~15 NM)
Head north across the mouth of the Sound toward Whidbey Island. This leg takes you past Possession Point—keep your eyes peeled for Gray Whales, which frequent these shallow feeding grounds.
- Stay: Langley Village Marina. A boutique marina at the base of a steep bluff.
- Activity: Walk up the hill into one of the most picturesque towns in Washington. Explore the many "secret" wooden alleys, high-end art galleries, and the Langley Whale Center.
- Tip: If the marina is full, there are a few guest mooring buoys available. It’s a short, scenic row to the heavy-duty dinghy dock.
- Dinner Ashore: Saltwater Fish House for oysters and chips, or Prima Pasta for an upscale, locally-sourced Italian meal.
Sunday — Langley → Seattle (~28 NM)
A long, rewarding sail home. You’ll have the length of Whidbey Island to your starboard side for the first half of the day.
- Route: Head south through Saratoga Passage, rounding Possession Point before catching the steady northerlies back toward Elliott Bay.
- Optional Lunch Stop: Everett (Port of Everett). If you have a fast boat or an early start, tuck into the Port of Everett (~8 NM from Langley). It’s a massive, modern facility with a "Guest Dock 1" that puts you steps away from a dozen lunch spots.
- Activity: Visit the Scuttlebutt Brewing taproom for a burger or check out the Waterfront Woods park if the crew needs to stretch their legs before the final push to Seattle.
- Tip: Watch the "Convergence Zone" south of Whidbey; the wind often dies out or shifts 180° near the shipwreck (the Equator) before picking back up for the final reach into the city.
