The Annual Spring Tides Flotilla: Journey to the San Juans
Every May, Windworks Sailing Club sets sail for our most anticipated event of the season—the Spring Tides Flotilla. Gathering a fleet of club members and seasoned captains, we cast off from Shilshole Marina and head north into the breathtaking waters of the San Juan Islands.
What are "Spring Tides"?
Don't let the name fool you—it isn't just about the season! In oceanography, a spring tide occurs twice a month around the full moon and the new moon, when the sun, moon, and Earth align. During these times, the gravitational pull is at its strongest, creating the highest high tides and the lowest low tides.
Navigating the Pacific Northwest during spring tides introduces massive tidal currents and exciting unique challenges. This makes our flotilla the ultimate hands-on playground for sharpening your tidal calculations, current navigation, and advanced seamanship under the guidance of our expert captains and experienced mentors.
A Fresh Adventure Every Year
No two Spring Tides Flotillas are ever the same. While our destination is always the magical San Juans, our itinerary changes every year to match the weather, the currents, and the whims of the sea.
