Sailing & Powerboat Lessons
At Windworks, we recommend starting with our 3-hour Intro to Sailing experience. It gives you a hands-on taste of handling the helm and pulling lines under the guidance of our US Sailing-certified instructors. Once you’re hooked, you can move on to our comprehensive US Sailing Basic Keelboat course to build real independence on the water.
You can learn the core fundamentals in just 3 days! Our US Sailing Basic Keelboat certification course takes place over a single weekend or 3 consecutive days. By the end of the course, you’ll have the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to skipper a day-sailor on Puget Sound independently.
Expect to be on the water and active right away. On your first day, your instructor will walk you through safety basics, rigging, and boat terminology before heading out of Shilshole Bay Marina. You’ll take turns steering at the tiller or wheel, managing sails, and practicing basic maneuvers. Learn more on our Sailing Lessons page.
Yes! Learning as a family is one of the best ways to prepare for future bareboat vacations, as everyone learns clear roles on board.
While adults form the core of our certification programs, teens are welcome in our courses when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Visit our Contact Us page or reach out to our office to discuss specific age recommendations and safety sizing for younger family members.
After graduating, our Catalina Club gives you access to our Capri 22 and Catalina 27 fleet, plus a complimentary 8-hour day sail to put your skills to work immediately. You can also log crew hours via our Windshare program, or join a club event, building confidence on larger yachts alongside fellow members.
Our introductory class runs 3 hours. Full US Sailing certification courses run 3 full days (typically 24 total instructional hours balanced between classroom strategy and hands-on practice on Puget Sound). See the schedule on our Lessons page.
Yes! Pacific Northwest sailors know that winter offers some of the best wind in the Puget Sound. We run courses year-round, equipping student sailors with quality foul-weather preparation so you can sail comfortably in any season. Explore seasonal options on our Lessons Overview page.
Our US Powerboating courses cover close-quarters maneuvering, docking under current and wind stress, engine maintenance checks, navigation rules, and emergency procedures like quick-stop man-overboard recoveries.
Spring and summer offer warm temperatures and gentle sea breezes—ideal for beginners. However, starting in fall or winter means smaller class sizes, greater boat availability, and strong breeze conditions that accelerate your skill-building. Check current availability on our Sailing Lessons page.
Yes. We supply all required lifejackets (PFDs), safety equipment, and training materials. You only need to bring weather-appropriate clothing and non-marking deck shoes. Read our pre-course guidelines on the Lessons page.
We continuously monitor Puget Sound marine forecasts. Beginner classes operate in light-to-moderate winds (typically 5–15 knots). If severe storm warnings or zero-visibility fog occur, we reschedule or focus on high-value land/classroom modules. Learn more about our safety standards on the About Us page.
Dress in comfortable, synthetic layers (avoid cotton), bring a wind/rain jacket, and wear closed-toe, non-marking rubber-soled shoes. Sun protection (sunglasses, hat, sunscreen) is recommended year-round. Check out our beginner preparation checklist on the Lessons page.
Completing US Sailing Bareboat Cruising at Windworks allows you to obtain an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or IPC, which are widely recognized for bareboat chartering in Europe, the Caribbean, and worldwide.
Club Membership
At Windworks, Membership eliminates the high overhead of boat ownership (moorage, maintenance, insurance). You get up to 50% off rental rates, access to our Windshare cost-sharing network, discounted US Sailing/US Powerboating certifications, free instructional clinics, and invitations to club flotillas.
If you plan to sail more than 3 or 4 times a year, membership pays for itself quickly. With monthly dues starting as low as $49/month, members save thousands compared to annual slip fees, haul-outs, and maintenance costs in the Seattle area. Review member savings on our Membership Tiers page.
Not at Windworks! Unlike traditional yacht clubs that require boat ownership, Windworks gives you full access to a maintained fleet ranging from 22-foot day-sailors to 40+ foot ocean cruisers—without requiring you to own a single deck cleat. Browse our full lineup on the Fleet page.
Traditional yacht clubs focus heavily on social events, dress codes, and boat ownership. Windworks is an active, hands-on sailing and powerboating club dedicated to time on the water, fleet access, high-caliber instruction, and community adventure. Read our story on the About Us page.
Located at I-Dock in Shilshole Bay Marina, Windworks offers direct access to Puget Sound without needing to navigate lock delays. Visit our Contact & Location page for directions.
Our membership tiers (such as Catalina Club and Windworks Club) grant tiered discounts off charter rates. Members also save up to 70% on formal sailing certifications and continuing education clinics. Explore all pricing details on our Membership Packages page.
We organize regular club flotillas, day trips, and social races. Members can sign up as skipper or crew, connect with other sailors, and explore regional destinations like the San Juan Islands in a friendly group setting. View upcoming events on our Events page.
If you only sail once a year, a single non-member charter makes sense. If you plan to sail regularly, build local experience, or gain higher certifications, joining our Club offers the best overall value.
Members log into our online portal to reserve vessels in advance. On charter day, you check out with our dock staff, perform a quick vessel pre-inspection, and head straight out onto Puget Sound. Check our fleet and reservation details on the Fleet page.
Members can reserve fleet cruisers for multi-day trips across Puget Sound and into the San Juan Islands. You can sail independently or join organized club flotillas where multiple boats travel together, sharing anchorages and evening BBQs. See past and future trips on our Events page.

Sailboats rely primarily on wind power for a tranquil, tactical journey, whereas powerboats offer higher cruising speeds to cover larger distances quickly. Windworks offers both options—view our full selection on the Fleet page.
To skipper a rental independently, you must demonstrate equivalent experience or hold recognized certifications (like US Sailing or ASA). If you don't have experience, you can hire a Windworks skipper to captain the boat for you via our Captained Charters page.
You will need a valid government-issued photo ID, documented sailing certifications (US Sailing, ASA, or international equivalents), a completed sailing resume, and a signed charter agreement. Find forms on our Charters page.
Day charter rates depend on the boat class (e.g., a Capri 22 day-sailor vs. a 38-foot cruiser). Members receive up to 50% off standard rates. See all pricing on our Charters page.
Multi-day charter fees depend on the size of the yacht and the season. Members enjoy substantially lower multi-day rates. Non-member charters incur additional insurance holds and turn fees. Details are on our Charters page.
Beginners must complete certification or pass a checkout evaluation before skippering alone. However, beginners can immediately jump aboard as crew through our member Windshare program.
Daily powerboat rental pricing varies by length and engine power. Members save significantly compared to non-member rates. Check our Fleet page for real-time rates.
Rentals include the vessel, required USCG safety gear (PFDs, flares, fire extinguishers), main navigation tools, and a briefing from our dock staff. Consumables like fuel are calculated based on charter length. Learn more on our Charters page.
Start by choosing a cruiser matched to your crew size from our Fleet page. Plot routes to nearby Puget Sound destinations like Blakely Harbor, Poulsbo, or Bainbridge Island, and confirm tide and current tables through Deception Pass or Agate Pass beforehand. Check out some suggested Destinations.
Vessels up to 22′ require US Sailing Basic Keelboat certification or equivalent. Vessels over 22′ require Basic Cruising certification, and overnight multi-day charters require Bareboat Cruising certification. Review checkout prerequisites on our Charters page.
